The Role of AI in Video Games
It's coming, but what role should it play in video gaming?
The Xbox Gaming Copilot
This week, Xbox Insiders received access to a new feature, Gaming Copilot, an integration intended to help gamers get unstuck by using AI to help solve their troubles or understand what they are looking at.

This feature even comes with a voice mode that can be used while playing the actual game to make the use more seamless and it’s capable of analyzing screenshots to better assist you.
I have some initial thoughts here from a few different angles.
Achievements, now this is coming from a dedicated achievement hunter since 2005/2006, and I love the game for the game, so I have to ask will this make achievements mean even less? OR, and hear me out, is it no different then looking up the answer in a forum or over at sites like trueachievement.com? If y’all think it’s basically the same thing and doesn’t degrade the value of someone having that achievement, then I can leave this argument in the dust.
Accessibility, this is where I think Xbox could really capitalize on the marketing of this feature. The integration of AI into Xbox games could enhance accessibility support for gamers. Guides and tutorial could be rewritten or delivered in tailored styles that are ingestible for gamers with learning difficulties which is pretty hard to argue against.
E-sports, training for e-sports hopefuls is another avenue for it’s use that Xbox has hinted at in previous marketing efforts for Gaming Copilot. Maybe you could get yelled at less in Marvel Rivals if you had a clanker telling you how to get good.
Recommendations, now this isn’t a feature yet but we could eventually see Gaming copilot make it’s way into the store and being offered as an option to help find new games for you to play, enhancing discoverability.
Personal Choice, here’s my concern, will we be forced to accept it or can it be fully turned off? Will gamers have the right or choice in telling it not to use data from your account to train it?
With all that being said. I don’t want this. I’m more than happy scouring an old forum site to find a solution to a difficult achievement or finding my way out of a dungeon. I don’t particularly enjoy having to see AI in every corner of my life, now there are certainly some potential major benefits and arguments for it like enhancing accessibility and making gaming more available for everyone, I just want the ability to live without it.
I guess the ultimate question remains though. Will Gaming Copilot be labeled a clanker?

I’ve seen various rumors and reports regarding price all over the place. Best just to wait and see what it will really be in a few weeks(?).

Major issues aside on this following the massive layoffs (which I’ve previously addressed), I think there’s a few assumptions we might be able to take from this;
GP is not going anywhere and will only continue to be built on
The next generation of consoles will continue to push us further toward digital only (which has a number of concerning implications)
Microsoft will either try to use the next console to get back in the hardware space, or they won’t care and take hardware at a loss to continue funneling people into the ecosystem and paying for GP.
Xbox Design Lab finally returns after shutting down last year
Personally, I can’t justify paying more for a controller than what a base model already costs but I love this for people who can afford the total customization. It’s also a great holiday gift (maybe my wife will see this comment).
